Mike Cleary – Chief Operating Officer, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)
Mike Cleary is a seasoned business executive and leader with over 30 years’ experience – in energy, information technology, manufacturing, supply-chain logistics, commodities trading and risk management – in over 12 countries, spanning four continents. Power Australia is proud to announce Mike as an advisory board member for the conference and exhibition.
Mike was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of AEMO in March 2012 – an Electricity and Gas Transmission and Market Operator that manages the power and gas grids and wholesale markets spanning seven of Australia’s eight states and territories. He is responsible for operating the real-time electricity and gas grids, including market functions, system planning and forecasting, and maintenance of information technology systems. In addition to his operational duties, Mike has also undertaken a variety of other roles – both strategic to the operational – including strategy definition and business planning, market design, organisation design, process transformation, systems design and implementation, and market readiness.
Mike is recognised as a results-oriented and decisive leader, with proven success in building high performing teams and developing leaders. He is the former Director of Strategic Planning at Banta Global Turnkey – a supply chain and logistics provider – where he oversaw the business expansion plans for Europe, North America and Asia. He also held a number of advisory positions with start-up companies in Silicon Valley focusing on product manufacturing and worldwide supply chain implementations.
Prior to moving to Australia, Mike was based in the United States, where he served as the Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). He directed an extensive wholesale electricity market implementation and corporate turnaround program. Mike’s experience in the United States also includes managing the expansion of PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organisation responsible for operating the power grid and wholesale power market on the east coast of the US (and recognised as the most successful electricity market operator worldwide). Mike is credited with leading the Accenture teams in the successful integration of five utility companies and the expansion of PJM operations from three to thirteen states.
Originally, from Ireland, Mike worked for the Electricity Supply Board – the Irish integrated utility board – for fifteen years across transmission, distribution, marketing, public lighting, metering, information systems and internal audit. He has also consulted to, and worked in, other senior management roles in the energy industry, at such firms as Constellation Commodities Group, Powerex, Anadarko, Modus Media, Deloitte and Accenture.
Mike is a fellowship member of the Charter Association of Certified Accountants and serves as chair on the advisory board of Law Squared. He holds the chair of international GO15 working group on the integration of intermittent energy resources and is a member of the Establishment Working group of the Centre of New Energy Technologies. In 2009, Mike was commissioned as an Admiral of the Texas Navy by Governor Rick Perry in recognition of his service to the people of Texas.
